Study Guide Development

Every year the University of Houston's Theatre Education Majors come together to create a Study Guide that is given to educators that bring their students to watch a performance of one of our shows. During the development, we focus on cross-curricular studies with core subjects, clear and measurable objectives, meeting TEKS standards, exciting and engaging activities, and creating activities that could be completed in forty minutes or less in a traditional classroom setting.

2017-2018: Luchadora! by Alvaro Saar Rios

This year the show that we created a study guide for was Luchadora! by Alvaro Saar Rios. Luchadora! is a retelling of the story Mulan. Instead of being about the girl who saved China, the show focuses on the first female in the sport of Lucho who has to hide her identity hidden because they would never let a women fight. The show explores traditions, multiculturalism, traditions, and the passing of stories and ideas from generation-to-generation.

The study guide writing process began with us meeting with both the director of the production (Justin Lucero) and the dramaturg in order to know what they would be focusing on with the show and what the message of the show was through their lens. It was important to the Theatre Education team that our study guide was furthering the vision of Justin.

After meeting with Justin we set as a team and created a grand list of the ideas and themes that we felt were important to hit in the study guide. We narrowed it down to fourteen topics and ideas that we would use to write our lessons.

My lesson focused on the idea that new cultures and ideas come from different countries come together and share ideas and traditions- multiculturism. The lesson is created took English I TEKS and combined them with Theatre I & II TEKS to create a lesson that combines studying other cultures through text and how ideas and traditions move from one condition to another.
